Purchased new. Alsek was derived from a Tlingit term of unknown meaning. It has been postulated that it may have meant it habitually rests.

During WWII, the US Army brought many narrow gauge engines North. One of the famous one where the Denver & Rio Grande Western K 28 engines. They were numbered 250, 251, 252, 253, 254, 255 and 256.
