History

The White Pass & Yukon Route shops are well known for their skills to build passenger cars.

Over decades they built various cars. Coach 230 is the latest home made car. Coach 230 started as a standard gauge tank car. When the cars came to Skagway, the WP&YR used narrow gauge trucks to run them on their 3 feet track. After discontinued of the freight service in 1982, these tank cars were scrapped. Only the underframe of a few survived.
When there was a need for an open platform coach, the shops build a steel body on the tank car frame. This open coach was used mostly on the Bennett run. After Railbus 5 were retired and leased to the Yukon government, open platform coach 230 usually coupled with the railbus was rebuilt in 2005 into a full covered coach. Now the car is named “Lake Big Kalzes”.
