Section Foreman Killed When Speeder Collides With Northbound Train

A fatal accident occurred on Saturday, November 4th, on the White Pass Railroad, when Dennis Kostis, 49 foreman at Pennington Section, accompanied by his helper, Fred Locke, was on a track speeder, which met the Northbound train in a rock cut between Carcross and Pennington. Locke jumped from the car when he saw the danger but Kostis stayed with it in an endeavour to save the speeder and was struck’ by the engine and hurled against the rocky sides of the cut, death being instantaneous.

“Denny” Kostis had worked for the W.P.& Y.R. for many years as sectionman and section foreman and was highly regarded by his employers and fellow workers. His wife and four children were in Skagway at the time of the fatality.

The remains were brought to Whitehorse where an inquiry was held and were removed to Skagway by return train.

The family will take the remains to Greece, accompanied by Mr. Speere Razis, section foreman at Cowley, who s a brother of Mrs. Kostis. Many friends throughout the North extend their deepest sympathy to the family in their sad bereavement.
